I’ve been gone so long during my book tour and at spring Quilt Market I wasn’t able to upload a May video, so here are two new videos: one for May and one for June. My goal is to do one video a month on color, and this month I answer the #1 question asked of me during my book tour and give you guidance on how to use the new 20 hot colors forecasted for quilters.

New Colors for 2009/2010

Quilter’s Newsletter June/July 2009 issue has an article on p. 37 (how’s that for specific!) by Luana Rubin, president of online fabric retailer eQuilter, in which Ms. Rubin forecasts the top 20 hot colors for quilters. She puts them together in a 5×4 grid, so that any two-block color combination makes a trendy color palette. Enjoy the video and the guidance it brings on actually putting these new hues to use in your quilts. Download the chart listing the new colors here.

Using Prints in a Color Palette

This video answers the most-often asked question I received during my April/May book tour. In fact, at every stop a quilter had this question. I had no idea prints were so challenging to people, and I’m delighted I was able to connect with my readers long enough for us to really have a discussion about color. In my classes students often bring fabrics that “read as solids,” and avoid busy prints altogether. Here I offer a solution for coordinating your favorite prints, whether large-scale, small-scale, contemporary or reproduction, in to a color palette for your quilt.

I have so much fun making these videos! Short, quick, and satisfying – just like candy. I took advantage of all the gorgeous light coming in from the windows in my studio and I shot this video today. It’s all about remaking a quilt if you could do it all over again. I call it Extreme Makeover: Quilt Edition. How often do you look at a quilt and say to yourself, “If I had it to do all over again, I would make that quilt so differently.” Well, here’s how you can!

I also teach a class based on this concept, and it’s a blast: it’s like going to a quilt show, as everyone’s quilt and results are different.

Enjoy! And you can subscribe to my YouTube Channel here.

Early adopters of Color Mastery loved the charts and miniature color wheels I included in the book. In fact, they couldn’t get enough of them. I heard from Liz, one of my readers, who just can’t bring herself to cut the mini color wheels from the back, and since color copying never gives accurate results, she wanted more of them. What if I had them printed up and offered in packs?

Well, I’ve done even better. I’m offering the Color Journal CD so you can print and customize your journal to your liking. You know how much I adore keeping a journal, even making my own with watercolor paper, hand-sewn binding, and fabric covers. But they still weren’t right. I wanted to have graph paper and blank paper together, so I could design a quilt on the graph paper, and draw, sketch, or audition fabric swatches on the blank paper. Now you can do both, and each journal page has all six color harmonies listed, so you don’t have to remember those fun names!

Plus, every chart and color wheel is included. I had no idea when I wrote Color Mastery how important the Color Harmony chart would be, and I couldn’t predict you’d want more of them! Now you don’t have to travel to the copy shop to make copies of the color wheel charts you fill in with your fabric swatches. It’s all on the CD.

And I’ve made it affordable. $16.95 for a lifetime of unlimited journals, the way you want them. I’ve already made one journal I keep in a three-ring binder – with pockets no less! I’ll be printing my next one on special paper, giving it a lovely binding, and presenting it as a gift to my quilting friend whose birthday is this month (not naming names in case she reads this!).

Ok, I’m gushing about keeping a journal and the Color Journal CD. It’s available only from the Color Mastery store, and I even offer a special price if you order the book and CD. Enjoy.

This week the local papers did articles on the book. The first is print edition only, but their website offers a photo of me, and more importantly, you can see my stash in the background (scroll down and it’s on the left sidebar). It’s well organized, but not huge by any means.

And here’s the article in my neighborhood newspaper as well:

My son’s band teacher saw the articles and asked him if I was famous. My son almost fell off his stool laughing. His teacher also asked him if we had a lot of quilts in the house, to which he answered, “No.” Where does he live? A quilt in every room of the house, thank you. Some even have two! Speaks volumes to the preoccupations of a teenaged-boy.

Congratulations Donna Coffey! You’re the lucky winner of the autographed copy of Color Mastery from all the of wonderful comments from Annie’s Quilting Stash listeners. Wow – the response was fantastic, and I’d delighted ya’ll enjoyed the podcast. Thank you for stopping by and visiting!

If you didn’t win, you can find Color Mastery at your local quilt shop. As Patsy Thompson, machine quilting expert, told me:

“I’m seeing reviews of it and a picture of the cover EVERYWHERE!”
